Essence of Aotearoa Series

Essence of Aotearoa paintings – with a semi abstract flair – is all about attempting to capture the very essence of our landscapes and therefore has been an emotional journey for me. I started by developing each painting around colour and balance and then with larger brush strokes was able to invoke light and movement into the paintings to give the viewer the feeling of ‘being there’.

Absorbed in Autumn – 1,000 x 750mm acrylic on stretched canvas. Hidden to most, but discovered by the fortunate ‘wanderers’. SOLD by McAtamney Art Gallery.

Te Tai Poutini Tempest – 750 x 750 mm, acrylic on stretched canvas. This wild and windy view – less than favourable sailing conditions – but it renders an artistic view of our magnificent seas along our West Coast, South Island. NFS

Mystic Fiordland 1000 x 750 mm. Acrylic on stretched canvas. Mystic Fiordland depicts the magic of our ‘shadowlands’ the beauty of which must be seen to be believed. P.O.A.

A Wanderers Gain 750m x 1000 mm, acrylic on stretched canvas. A Wanderers Gain is a sneak peek into the glorious autumn landscape nearby Arrowtown. P.O.A.

Tempest – Cook Straight. 480 x 610mm acrylic on stretched canvas. While painting this, I definitely thought I’d stay another day in Picton rather than venturing out on this wild and stormy seas!

The Race, where two currents collide 750mm x 1,000 mm acrylic on stretched canvas. Aotearoa is surrounded by these magnificent seas and capturing their fury and beauty is sheer delight! P.O.A.

Pakihi, first light. 610 x 480mm – acrylic on stretched canvas. The Pakihi is close to Westport (where I grew up) and I’ve finally painted a childhood memory!
